Muscle Mass After 40: Why It’s the One Thing Worth Protecting
Muscle isn’t about looking a certain way. It’s the tissue that decides how you function at 70, and it starts leaving quietly from your 30s unless you give it a reason to stay.

Personal training, shared with a small number of people. Your own program, written from your own assessment, coached in real time — from $60 a session when you train three times a week.
Where semi-private sits
You get your own program and a coach watching your technique, the way you would one-on-one — at a price closer to a class than a private session.
Affordable and social, but the workout isn’t yours and nobody is watching your technique.
The coaching quality of 1-on-1 at a price that makes three sessions a week realistic — which is where results actually compound.

The format
Semi-private personal training means personal training, shared with a small number of people. You get an individualised program tailored to your goals and experience, guided by experts to give you the best training for your health and longevity.
Sessions at Solve run with 2–3 people per coach. The group is small enough that your movement is being watched, your form is being corrected, and you’re being guided for the entire session.
It’s not a class you follow. It’s your program, coached — with two other people in the room doing theirs.
How it compares
This is the best-value way to train effectively — rather than the cheapest way to have a gym membership.

The difference
Your own program, written from your assessment, your goals, your injury history. Not a class where everyone does the same thing.
Two other people are booked into your slot and your coach is expecting you. That’s what makes you show up for yourself, week in week out.
You arrive, grab your iPad and get started. From there your coach is watching almost every set for technique and intensity, not calling instructions to a room of twenty. If something is off in your form, you hear about it immediately, before it becomes a habit or an injury.
In a private gym, with a well-planned program and no queue for equipment, you get a comprehensive workout in 45 minutes.
Something changes when other people are working next to you. You push a little further and the session goes faster.
Work out with a friend. If you come on your own, you’ll train alongside members at every level — you’re measuring yourself against last week, not competing against each other.
Getting started
Nothing is programmed until we’ve seen how you move — and that happens inside the free consult, so you can start straight after.

A 45-minute session covering your training history, injury history and goals, plus a functional movement assessment and a walk through the gym. Everything we need to build your program around your body — all in the one appointment.
Based on that assessment, we write a program built specifically for you. You’ll receive a full breakdown and explanation of your plan before you start.
You’ll be set up on your Solve dashboard, where you can view your program, track progress against what we measure, and see your upcoming sessions.
You can start straight after the consult — there’s no separate appointment in between. From your first session, your coach guides you through every workout, explaining and adjusting each exercise in detail.
Semi-private vs 1-on-1
1-on-1 offers the highest level of individual attention, and it’s the right format for complex rehabilitation, highly specific performance goals, or a period where concentrated coaching is necessary. The problem is sustaining it.
At 1-on-1 rates, most people can’t train often enough or for long enough to see what’s actually possible — or they can afford a single session a week and are left to exercise alone for the rest of it. They buy a block, the budget runs out, and they’re back to managing things on their own before they’ve built the habits or the foundation they need.
Here’s what that looks like in practice. Three semi-private sessions a week at Solve costs $180. Compare that to the most common alternative: a gym membership at around $30 a week, plus a single 1-on-1 PT session at $120–$150. You’ve already spent $150–$180 and you’ve got one coached session to show for it, plus a membership you may or may not use.
For people who aren’t going to the gym independently, that model is a poor return. You’re paying personal training prices to train once a week.
At Solve there’s no membership to pay for — facility access is included in the session price.
Semi-private delivers the same coaching quality at a cost that makes three coached sessions a week achievable. That frequency is where results compound.

Your goals sit in the territory of strength, body composition, longevity, mobility or general conditioning — and you don’t have any major training restrictions that require constant attention.
You’re working through complex rehabilitation, have significant movement restrictions requiring full-session attention, or have a specific short-term performance goal. Some clients use 1-on-1 for a defined period and then transition into semi-private as their foundation builds.

Semi-private FAQs
Sessions run with a maximum of 3 people per coach. That cap is what preserves the coaching quality that makes the format work — your coach can watch and adjust every person in the session, with enough capacity to give you all detailed attention.
Yes, with one thing to know about how sessions are structured. Normally clients start on a staggered schedule — a new person begins every 15 minutes, so the coach can give each person focused attention during their warm-up and early sets.
If you want to book with a friend, partner or colleague, you can both start in the same slot rather than staggered. You’ll be in the gym at the same time, training alongside each other, but your programs stay individual. It’s not a couples class — it’s two people getting coached simultaneously, in the same space.
No. Your starting point is assessed in your free consultation. Beginners and experienced trainers both use this format; the programs look very different, but the structure and coaching quality are the same.
In a group class, everyone follows the same workout. In a semi-private session, every person has their own program. Your exercises, your load, your progressions — all of it based on your assessment, your history and your goals.
Yes, and it’s often the most appropriate format at this stage. Training in your 40s looks very different to training in your 50s, and it requires more precision than most people realise: managing joint load carefully, building bone density, preserving and increasing muscle mass, identifying structural imbalances before they become problems. Semi-private coaching provides that level of attention in a way independent training or group classes can’t.
A structured training block built around compound movements and mobility work relevant to your goals. You’ll typically complete 5–8 exercises per session. Conditioning is included where appropriate.

Protein is the single most important variable in a fat loss diet — not because it burns fat, but because it decides whether the weight you lose comes off as fat or as muscle.
One gets you a coach’s undivided attention. The other gets you three times as many coached sessions for the same money. For most people, the second one produces better results — and here’s why.
