The story

About Max

Max has been training seriously for fifteen years, most of it under some remarkable coaches — Olympians, strength and conditioning staff out of professional rugby clubs, sprint coaches who’d worked with NFL teams, international-level rugby coaches running the programs he came up through.

From those environments he learned how elite programmes build four or five qualities at once: strength, power, aerobic base, movement quality and recovery, all year round — and, crucially, when to dial each one up or down.

Getting someone lean is a single-variable goal. Keeping someone strong, mobile, balanced and independent into their seventies is a multi-variable one.

That’s the actual skill in longevity training, and it’s why most six-week transformation coaching doesn’t transfer to it. It requires planning on a yearly scale rather than a six-week scale, and it’s the problem Max has spent his whole career around.

He’s also been to both ends of the physical spectrum himself. Playing front row in rugby he got up to 108kg and was the strongest he’d ever been — genuinely fit with it, because he finally had good coaching and was eating to support it. Three years later he and three mates ran 80 marathons in 79 days down the east coast of the United States for cancer research, and he came out of it with less muscle on him than he’d had since he was fifteen. Same body, opposite stimulus, completely different outcome.

Neither end is a good place to live. Very heavy and very strong isn’t sustainable and doesn’t age well. Very lean and very aerobic leaves you fragile and open to a range of health issues. What he’s spent the last few years doing — on himself and with clients — is working out how to hold a sensible middle, and live a balanced, healthy life from there.

What the mistakes taught him

He spent years under-eating through pre-season because he wanted to look a certain way, and trained worse for it. He later ran a fat loss phase far more aggressively than he’d ever put a client through, got very lean, and felt terrible doing it.

He now builds phases the way he wishes someone had built them for him: slower, in blocks, with maintenance periods in between, so the result actually holds.

On the formal side, Max holds a Bachelor of Science, a nationally recognised nutrition qualification and a personal training certification. He’s worked at Ultimate Performance — about as rigorous as commercial personal training gets — and coached teams through HYROX and triathlons.

How we work

Four things we won’t compromise on

01

Three people. Never more.

The cap is three because past that, coaching stops being coaching. It’s the constraint the whole business is built around, and it’s the one thing we won’t stretch to fit another booking in.

02

Every program is written by Max.

Any coach delivering a session works to the same standard and to Max’s programming. The plan doesn’t change depending on who’s on the floor that morning.

03

If we can’t measure it, we don’t claim it.

Strength, mobility, balance, body composition and bone density are all tracked. You should be able to see progress, not take it on faith.

04

We stay in our lane.

We look after the physical pillars of longevity. Bloods, sleep studies and clinical optimisation belong with your doctor, and we’ll happily coordinate with them rather than talk over them.

Who we work with

Busy, capable people who don’t have time for trial and error

People who want to improve their health, strength and body composition — and would rather follow a plan built by someone who knows what they’re doing than keep guessing.

Plenty of our clients arrive with little or no gym experience. We meet you where you are, build confidence with the fundamentals, and progress at your pace. Others arrive strong but stiff, or fit but plateaued, or coming back from an injury they’ve been training around for years. Every one of them starts with the same movement assessment.

The move to Brookvale

A private gym, not a gym floor

Solve trains out of Evexia Wellbeing at Unit 1/27 Dale St, Brookvale — a private, fully equipped space with parking on site. No commercial gym floor, no queue for a rack, no music you didn’t choose.

We moved from Freshwater to get the room and the equipment the semi-private format actually needs. Most of our Freshwater, Curl Curl and Queenscliff clients made the move with us; it’s a few minutes down the hill.

About Solve

Questions about Max and Solve

Who will actually be coaching me?

Every program is written by Max, and he delivers the majority of sessions himself. Other coaches work in some sessions and cover when he’s away — and any coach delivering a session works to the same standard and to Max’s programming.

That’s the reason the semi-private cap is three rather than eight: beyond that, the format stops delivering what it promises regardless of who’s coaching.

What are Max’s qualifications?

A Bachelor of Science, awarded the Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence; a certified personal trainer; and a nationally recognised nutrition qualification with specialist training in sustainable fat loss and body composition. Coaching practice was developed under elite industry mentors and specialists, including time at Ultimate Performance.

Why longevity rather than general fitness?

Because the things that determine how well you function at 70 — strength, muscle mass, bone density, mobility and balance — are trainable now and much harder to recover later. Chasing a number on the scale or a single personal best doesn’t protect any of them. See what we track and measure →
